Accountability refers to anything one has or has been delegated to look after and nurture it. And once this is done accurately and nicely, it is then called transparency. When accountability and transparency combine, the outcome is integrity forming a character.
It is indeed a crucial mandate for us to question ourselves every morning as we wake up, What I am I accountable for? Who am I accountable to? In every instance, we have absolutely a primary responsibility and a secondary and probably a tertiary.
For example, I am a man in a community, a husband to my wife and a father to my children. What is my primary responsibility as a man in the community, husband to my wife, and as a father to my children. And then what is my secondary responsibility, for me, I am a Pastor, serving a church. If I know all these fully well, I am accountable and once I, do it right and properly, I am transparent and many people will see my personality. And If I were to give account for this, I must know my due diligence.
This is lacking in many of our homes, work places and churches. Who am I and what am I supposed to is essential? Once this concept of accountability is misinterpreted and miscommunicated, there is mismanagement. This is not a shared responsibility; it is an accountability. Who was accountable for picking the forbidden fruit in Eden? The Bible says Adam, why? when the Bible tells us that Eve actually picked the fruits (Gen 3:6). Adam failed his responsibility as he was right beside Eve. He is accountable for this and we, his children reap the consequences of his unaccountability. Am I my brother’s keeper is another example in the Bible (Gen 4:9). Yes, in Melanesian culture, he is responsible in the absence of his parents. We need to give account to God what we have done each day. Many times, we fail in our primary responsibilities in total ignorance, but do well in our secondary and tertiary duties and responsibilities perhaps because there are rules and guidelines. Remember our adversary the devils see this gap and creeps in to steal, kill and destroy us, family, work and business (John 10:10a). We need to know our responsibilities precisely and then do it well and allow God to say, well done, my good and faithful servant one day
So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God
